Juneteenth is here! Here’s how the Piedmont Triad is celebrating (2024)

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — Freedom’s ringing all month as the Triad prepares for Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Black people in Texas learned from U.S. soldiers they were free despite the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation two years earlier.

Although Black people have honored the day individually for decades, Juneteenth was established as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, and city-wide festivities haven’t stopped since.

From outdoor festivals to farmers markets, there are plenty of ways to celebrate Juneteenth this year. Check out a few below!

“Our goal as a coalition of faith leaders in collaboration with our community partners is to address hunger and food insecurity in our communities,” said Lolita Watkins, community organizer with Triad Black Faith Leaders and Black Farmers Market.

“This event is open to everyone; it’s an opportunity for families to support our local economy, farmers, and artists while celebrating the importance of Juneteenth and supporting minority-owned businesses and creatives,” said Shaunne Thomas, Guilford County MWBE director.

Juneteenth Bike Tour: Green Book Along the Greenway

Saturday, June 22 — 10 a.m.

“Join us to explore historical locations and currently operating Green Book sites in the Gate City on this guided, family-friendly 3-mile ride.”

Register by June 21.

The tour departs at 10:30 am and returns to the museum by 12 p.m. Check-in opens at 10 am.
